What Is a PS2 BIOS and Why Does NetherSX2 Need It?

BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) is the firmware inside a real PlayStation 2. It starts the hardware, initializes the CPU and memory, and runs the boot sequence. Think of it as the PS2’s operating system.

NetherSX2 recreates the PS2 hardware in software — but it cannot recreate Sony’s copyrighted firmware, so it asks you to supply it. Without a valid BIOS, the virtual hardware never initializes: games won’t boot, and you’ll see a black screen or a “no BIOS found” message.

It Boots Everything

The BIOS enables booting, memory-card handling, and correct system behavior for each region.

It Doesn’t Do Graphics

Visuals and frame rate come from your phone’s GPU — the BIOS has almost no effect on performance.

A Bad One Breaks Things

A wrong or corrupted BIOS causes boot failures, FMV glitches, and memory-card errors. A clean dump matters.

The Legal Rule: Dump It From a PS2 You Own

Different types of NetherSX2 BIOS

The BIOS files are generally grouped by the PS2 console’s region and model.

Japan BIOS

Intended for Japanese PS2 consoles. Japanese-region games may require this region’s BIOS.

USA BIOS

Intended for North American PS2 consoles. This is a common choice for North American game collections.

Europe BIOS

Intended for European PS2 consoles and commonly associated with PAL-region games.

Asia Bios

These may differ in language, region settings, and console-specific firmware.

How to choose BIOS?

You can confirm which BIOS you need by checking the region of your PS2 game. Since you use NetherSX2 on Android, follow these steps:

  • Open NetherSX2 and look at the name of the game you want to play, such as GTA San Andreas.
  • Next, check the game’s region or serial number.
  • USA versions commonly have codes such as SLUS-xxxxx or SCUS-xxxxx, European versions commonly use SLES-xxxxx or SCES-xxxxx, and Japanese versions commonly use SLPS-xxxxx or SLPM-xxxxx.
  • You can find this information in the game’s filename, game details, or disc information.
  • If your game has a USA code, choose a USA-region PS2 BIOS; if it has a European or Japanese code, choose the matching region.
  • If you already have several BIOS files, check their filenames and region information, but remember that filenames alone are not definitive proof.

How to Dump the BIOS From Your Own PS2

Dumping sounds technical, but the flow is simple. Here is what a good dump looks like, then the process.

physical PlayStation 2 console

  1. Identify your console model. Look at the label on the back or bottom of your PS2. It may show a model such as SCPH-39001 or SCPH-70012.
  2. Find a compatible BIOS dumper. Use a reputable PS2 homebrew project and verify that the dumper supports your console and system configuration. A dumper utility is separate from NetherSX2.
  3. Prepare the USB drive. Format it as FAT32 if the dumper requires that format, and follow the utility’s instructions for arranging its files.
  4. Run the dumper on your PS2. Follow its instructions to launch it. Depending on your console, you may need a compatible homebrew-launching method.
  5. Save the BIOS files. The utility should copy the BIOS from your console to the USB drive. Wait for the process to finish and check for any errors.
  6. Transfer the files to Android. Connect the USB drive to your phone using a suitable USB adapter, or transfer the files through a computer.
  7. Import the BIOS into NetherSX2. Open the emulator’s BIOS setup, browse to the dumped files, and select a compatible BIOS.

don’t own a physical PS2

  1. Simply verify the region of your game.
  2. Select the regional BIOS.
  3. Click on the download button placed above.
  4. you will get a .bin 4mb file.
  5. Go to the import BIOS step in your emulator and import the downloaded fle.

How to Import the BIOS Into NetherSX2

Your file is on your phone? You are under a minute away from playing.

  1. Open NetherSX2 on your Android device.
  2. Go to App Settings → BIOS.
  3. Tap Import BIOS.
  4. Browse to the folder where you placed your .bin file and select it.
  5. Confirm the import. The BIOS status should show “Valid BIOS Detected.”
  6. Multiple BIOS files? Import each one and pick the active one in the same screen. The first-time setup wizard also prompts for a BIOS before you add your game folder.

Which BIOS Version Should You Use?

Best Overall: SCPH-70012 (USA)

From a later slim model, firmware v1.90, stable and compatible with the US library most people play. SCPH-39001 (v1.60) is a good backup for very early 2000–2002 titles.

Does Region Matching Matter?

One good USA BIOS handles most games. Matching BIOS region to game region reduces wrong-language defaults, video-mode errors, and black screens. Mixed library? Keep one BIOS per region and switch in Settings.

“BIOS Not Detected” & Other Errors

Almost every BIOS problem is one of these six. Work through them in order.

✕ File Still Zipped

Problem: You selected a ZIP archive.

Fix: Extract it first — NetherSX2 needs the raw .bin file.

✕ Corrupted or Fake File

Problem: File is a few KB or hundreds of MB.

Fix: A real BIOS is ≈ 4 MB. Re-dump from your own console for a clean file.

✕ No Storage Permission

Problem: The app can’t read your files.

Fix: Grant storage permission in Android’s app settings, then import again.

✕ Import Didn’t Stick

Problem: BIOS list is still empty.

Fix: Remove the entry in App Settings → BIOS and import the file again.

✕ Black Screen on One Game

Problem: A single game won’t boot.

Fix: Switch to a BIOS from that game’s region before blaming the game file.

✕ “Corrupted BIOS” Error

Problem: The file failed the validity check.

Fix: Don’t hunt for another download — re-dump from your PS2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. NetherSX2 cannot boot or run any PS2 game without a valid PS2 BIOS file. It’s a mandatory part of setup, not an optional enhancement.

No. There is no built-in or replacement BIOS. The emulator will not function for gaming until you import one dumped from a PlayStation 2 you own.

No. The PS2 BIOS is Sony’s copyrighted firmware. Downloading it is copyright infringement in most countries, regardless of whether you own a PS2. The legal route is dumping it from your own console, for personal use.

For most users, SCPH-70012 (USA, NTSC-U) — stable, broadly compatible, and matched to the largest game library. Keep a second region’s BIOS if you play PAL or Japanese games.

Anywhere on your device storage. You don’t place it manually — open NetherSX2, go to App Settings → BIOS, tap Import BIOS, and select the file. The app handles the rest.

The usual causes: the file is still zipped (extract the .bin first), it’s corrupted or fake (a real BIOS is ≈ 4 MB), NetherSX2 lacks storage permission, or the import didn’t complete. Re-import after checking each.

Not directly. Frame rate and visuals come from your device’s hardware and the emulator’s graphics settings. The BIOS affects booting, region behavior, and compatibility — a wrong or corrupt one causes failures and glitches, not slowdowns.

Yes. A clean BIOS dumped from your own console is just a file — the same .bin works in PCSX2 on PC as well as NetherSX2 on Android.
